Arts & Culture

Sacred Heart College offers a multi-faceted programme rich in arts and culture, and celebrates student contribution and achievement. Students are encouraged to participate in at least two co-curricular activities to extend their learning and deepen their sense of belonging and understanding of others.

Sacred Heart boys are proud of their cultures, evident throughout the College by a strong representation in the Kapa Haka, Tongan and Samoan groups. Students of all ethnicities are encouraged to join a cultural group and strengthen their relationships within the College. To acknowledge a growing tradition, we celebrate Matariki and Māori, Samoan and Tongan language weeks every year.

Kapa Haka Group – Kia ora

Sacred Heart has three Kapa Haka groups across all Year levels, each representing our passion for honouring Māori culture. Together, these groups compete and perform at local events, international cultural gatherings and local primary schools to celebrate Māori culture within our school and the wider community.

Samoan Group – Talofa lava

Our Samoan group participates in local events and school ceremonies to share their passion with the wider community. In honour of our Samoan and Pasifika roots, a traditional lavalava is part of our formal College uniform.

Tongan Group – Malo e lelei

For many years, our Tongan group has received accolades and gained top prizes at events such as the ASB Polyfest. The Tongan language is an important part of the Sacred Heart identity, and we proudly incorporate it into school events throughout the year.

Drama, debating and public speaking

Alongside our academic curriculum, we encourage students to participate in these areas of school life. In doing so, boys gain confidence, develop analytical skills and learn to improvise quickly in a persuasive manner – all essential skills for lifelong learning and success.

The College puts together a production each year, typically performing to a sold-out crowd. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to broaden their skills and talents, build confidence and interact constructively with their peers to work towards a common goal.
